Originally trained as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator I found myself in Education when my children came along. In 2007 I became unwell quite suddenly. I was having violently painful headaches with speech loss and paralysis with attacks occurring everyday for nearly 7 months. Nobody knew what was going on. I was in and out of hospital, assessed on the stroke wards, brain scans, lumbar punctures… you name it, I had it. No medication seemed to work. after being assessed by the Neurology department they suggested it could be a consistent cluster headache that wasn’t stopping. After many more medications it began to slow down. I was then diagnosed with acute hemiplegic migraine/cluster headaches. Just over a year later I returned to work. The clusters still came with individual random attacks in between. I was lucky and had incredible employers who supported me throughout it all. I generally have 3 major clusters a year lasting from 4 to 12 weeks. The attacks cause paralysis in my left side from 2 to 8 hours with horrendous pain and absence. I lose my speech which generally returns after about 72 hours. By 2016 the attacks were not changing and I was beginning to feel I was losing the consistency with the kids I was working with and decided enough was enough and it was certainly not fair on my employers any more to support me with the difficulties I had. I decided to go back to Uni with the idea of working for myself as an Illustrator. I could work when I was able and do something I loved! I graduated in 2016 with a first class honours Degree in Illustration at the age of 48! I wanted to work part time while I was getting my freelance career on the go but it hasn’t worked out like that. I have found myself unemployable due to the condition I have. No one wants to take on someone who may have periods of time off. Although this is understandable, it has been soul destroying for me. I still have a lot to give and an active intelligent mind when I am well. I am trying many different methods to produce my work on gifts as well as selling prints but its not going as well as I’d like! I need to feel I have some worth and can provide an income for myself. I draw constantly when I am able, it is not only therapeutic but I just love what I do!
