Description

This lovely piece of white sea glass was a recent find on our beach here in Sandness, Shetland, and has been carefully wrapped with silver-plated wire before adding an agate gem stone for colour.

Shetland sea glass tends to be beautifully shaped and rounded due to our stormy weather and wild seas, and I spend many hours happily pottering on our local beach here in Sandness, looking for ‘sea treasures’ and chatting to curious seals. All finds are brought home and cleaned up before I decide what to do with them.

This pendant will arrive with a silver plated chain, stored in an organza bag, ready to be gifted or kept!

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2010, and with this came Fibromyalgia, Raynauds, Depression and Anxiety. Once an active, outdoorsy person who worked with horses and livestock, I became too lame and unbalanced to be safe around large animals and unable to ride on a professional basis due to the pain. I discovered horsehair braiding after joining Facebook, and began experimenting with different methods as well as learning some basic jewellery-making skills and making resin crafts. Then I took the plunge and opened up a Facebook page for my makes and designs, and while it is not the most active of pages, I have managed to sell some pieces and gather a lovely 'gang' of followers who give me lots of moral support. I really thought my life was over when I realised I couldn't work with horses, walk for miles with my dogs and do all of the things I took for granted. Now I feel I have a purpose, helping those who have lost their beloved pets and horses to have a precious keepsake, and an added bonus is that the braiding helps to keep my fingers and wrists from stiffening up too much. But there is more! I moved to Shetland in 2016 and while I continue with my first love of horsehair braiding, I also scour the beaches to find sea glass and pottery pieces to make unique jewellery pieces, use my braiding and knotting skills to craft leather bracelets, pendants and key rings and have discovered a love of using polymer clay to make little ponies that often resemble those found on the hills of my home in the 'Westside' of Shetland. It is with these 'makes' that I hope to run a successful online store some day.
