I have always loved arts and crafts and have experimented with many different disciplines throughout my life, including painting and drawing, colouring, pottery, making models and creating collages. I also learnt to sew at a young age, creating my own soft toys using scrap fabric.

I first tried cross-stitching when I was about 10 years old, though I didn’t really get into it until I was about 13. I started making some of my own design aged 14 or 15. I carried on stitching until I was about 17, when I started studying art and design at college and focussed on the arts and crafts I was learning there.

I rediscovered my love of cross-stitching in 2013, when I was 22. Since then, I have stitched many designs, some of them my own, and some by other designers.

After I completed a BA in Design and Innovation with the Open University in 2017, I decided to turn my cross-stitch passion into a business, so I bought a cross-stitch designing computer program and started creating my own designs to sell online as pdf files, launching my business in 2018.

I chose the name ‘Playful Penguin Design’ because I have loved and collected penguins since I was less than 3 years old, and wanted a name that reflects the fun nature of the designs I have created.

Over the last couple of years, I have been experimenting with some ways to expand my business to include some physical products. During this process, I fell in love with decoupage and I am currently enjoying decorating a range of wooden boxes and other small items for sale.

As I am autistic and have anxiety, agoraphobia and depression, I am unable to go out to work; this business is a great way that I can keep busy, generate some income and use my art and design skills.

I hope you love my cross-stitch designs and decoupage items as much as I have loved creating them!
