Critiquing and Beta-Reading Services for Fiction Manuscripts, Writing

Description

**Professional writer available to critique your fiction**

Why You Need a Critique

The majority of writers benefit from having another professional writer evaluate and analyse their writing, as the author of the piece is often too close to the work to notice any holes in the plot, characterisation problems, or continuity errors. This is what a critiquer can do: offer detailed feedback on your work and advice for improvement. Of course, any advice is only one person’s opinion.

What I Can Offer

I can offer you detailed advice on how you can improve your manuscript, plot idea (synopsis) and cover letter. However, I cannot guarantee that I can make your work publishable, nor can I guarantee that it will be accepted by an agent or editor at a publishing house.

I can only offer improvements and feedback on the material that you send me, therefore you need to already have a basic grasp of how stories work and be able to create realistic characters. I can help you improve these aspects, but if you don’t already know the basics of story-writing, than I will be of little help.

What I offer is not an editing service. Although I will suggest changes that can be made, I will not make the changes for you. The main purpose of my critique is to offer you an opinion from an already-published writer, and suggest ways your material can be improved.

Why You Should Go With Me

– I’ve had two novels traditionally published
– I’ve also had seventeen short stories traditionally published
– I graduated from Exeter University–one of the top universities in the UK–with a BA Honours degree in English.-
– I have a excellent grasp of grammar
– I am familiar with both British English and American English
– I can work to a specific style guide if requested

**Beta-Reading**

£3 per 1,000 words (80,000 word manuscript = £240) – PLEASE ASK ME A QUESTION FOR A QUOTE

In beta-reading your manuscript, I’ll pay close attention to story structure, readability, characterisation, and plot, and I’ll provide you with constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement. Such feedback will be given in comments throughout the manuscript.

**In-Depth Critique**

£5 per 1,000 words (80,000 word manuscript £400) -PLEASE ASK ME A QUESTION FOR A QUOTE

The manuscript critique can apply for both partials and full manuscripts, of short-story to novel length (depending on payment). If you are thinking of sending an extract of a larger piece, I strongly suggest that you send me the opening. This is because the opening of any piece of fiction is the most important. It has got to be engaging enough to keep people reading, and will nearly always be the sample that an editor or agent requests (along with the synopsis, so they can see that you know how to structure a plot).

I will read the manuscript and give in-depth feedback and detailed comments and annotations throughout the manuscript on the effectiveness of your writing, how engaging it is, your use of imagery, characterisation and plot development. Suggestions will be given for improvements on the plot and characterisation. I’ll also look out for individual words that could be changed to strengthen your writing, such as dialogue tags, and redundant words. Every manuscript over 10,000 words will also come with a 2-4 page report assessing your manuscript as a whole.

All materials sent should be in standard manuscipt format (double spaced with 12 point Times New Roman font).

I only accept electronic files for critiques.

Turn-around times vary depending on length of manuscript. Please message me with your information.

The images in this listing are of my own published books.

Please message me via Conscious Crafties to get started! I always do the first 5 pages of a manuscript for free to check that we are both happy working with each other.

Aged nineteen, I was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. But I won’t let my chronic illnesses stop me from being who I am, or achieving my dream of being a full-time writer. Writing gives me an identity, and becoming chronically ill made me realise just how important writing is to me. Writing is part of me. I have a strong love for anything dystopian, ghostly, or paranormal. I can frequently be found exploring wild places, and at least one notebook is known to follow me wherever I go. My debut novel, UNTAMED (first published by Prizm Books in May 2015), examines a world in which anyone who has negative emotions is hunted down, and a culture where addiction is encouraged.
