I am a mother to 4, a musician and have always been into arts and crafts.
At the age of 11, my eldest son went from being a ‘normal’, healthy teenager to constantly falling and being admitted to hospital regularly. Over the course of a couple of years he was diagnosed with Charcot Marie Tooth Disease Type 1A and with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which left him wheelchair bound and in constant pain. Myself and my daughter were also diagnosed with the same hereditary condition, but luckily it hasn’t effected us at the same rate.
I gave up work to become a full time carer. Approx 5 years on, and my son has learnt to live with his conditions, training, going onto college to study graphic design and playing wheelchair basket ball in the junior league division! He makes me proud every single day!
My teenage daughter has been prone to suffer from mental issues, as well as the aches and pains that go along with CMT, Her strength, determination and willingness to involve herself in projects that support others with similar experiences is inspiration!
My mother is a tower of support to us all but does suffer from Bipolar and has recently been diagnosed with COPD, so times can be tough. We look after each other and keep each other in check!
Life is good and we remain as positive as we can, but over the past few years, there has been been little time for me – so in January 2018, I made a conscious decision to dedicate a little more time to taking care of myself. This meant focusing on things I enjoy (after all, to be strong for those you love you need to take care of yourself first!). I had a go at Paper cutting &; Pyrography and was amazed at the response I got from family and friends. That’s when ‘Kerensa’s Keepsakes’ was born!
I do struggle at times as CMT can effect your hands, making it painful to work – but the joy I get from working for my amazing customers and the focus it has given me makes it all worthwhile! I can’t wait to see where the venture leads!
